Students do not have the option to add an email alias to their account - email addresses consist of the student's username + @deakin.edu.au. Prior to trimester 3 of 2021, student usernames were randomly generated, consisting of letters from their first and/or last name.
To avoid usernames/email addresses based on identifiable characteristics that may change, students are now given a username consisting of the letter 'S' + their student ID number, this aligns with the format used by most universities and removes any personally identifiable information from the username or email address.
If a student would like to request a new username, they need to contact Student Central. The student cannot request a specific username, the new one will use the updated formatting and become 'S' + Student ID number.
Staff can request an additional/secondary email alias at any time by calling the Service Desk on 1800 463 888 or by submitting a ticket online.
Staff also have the option to request a new primary email alias, but eligibility is subject to review as many Deakin systems tie in directly to the primary alias - if changed, there can be potential loss of access to sites and services. To request a change to your primary email alias, please refer to this form.
Important: If your primary alias request is successful, you will need to sign back into Deakin services (such as the LastPass browser extension) as the change will expire any existing session. Additionally, access to any Microsoft 365 related services can take up to 2 hours. If you are unable to access these services after this time period, please contact the Service Desk. |
Some users have raised concerns that their generated email address will not look professional when contacting an external organisation or internal colleague - please be advised that all modern email clients will show your display name when they receive an email from you.
s12345678@deakin.edu.au or username@deakin.edu.au will only show for the recipient if they open your contact card or address book. See the example below.
The first image shows what the recipient will see when you send them an email
The second image shows how the recipient can find your email address within the contact card
The third image shows how someone can search their contacts list for your name and find your email address
Students can contact Student Central to request a change to their Deakin display name, and Staff can contact Human Resources to request a change to their Deakin display name.
