Duo Mobile (MFA) – Setup Instructions

In an effort to improve cybersecurity and protect the information of our staff and students at Deakin, Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is in place when accessing Deakin applications. This is done by using the Duo Mobile App.

Follow the instructions to install Duo onto your smartphone, and set up MFA.

Installation Instructions

Note: It is very important that you do not download any programs attempting to impersonate Duo Security, Inc., or Duo Mobile as a product. If you are unsure which app to download, please contact the IT Service Desk.

Download the latest version of Duo Mobile via Google Play, or the Apple Store.

If your mobile phone is not able to support Duo then please call eSolutions on 1800 463 888 so we can provide you with an alternate MFA method.

Note: If you encounter an error message labelled Bad Message 431, when trying to setup MFA, please clear your browsing data by following the instructions in the article.

Setup Instructions

  1. Download the "DUO Mobile" app onto your device from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

  2. Visit https://mfa.signon.deakin.edu.au/

  3. Select 'Continue Verification'.

  4. Select 'Start setup'.

  5. Select 'Mobile Phone'.

  6. Enter your Mobile Number.

A checkbox will appear asking if this is your correct number. You must have the right number of digits in order for this checkbox to appear, please tick it and click 'Continue'.

Note: DUO supports international mobile numbers and users can add their overseas mobile numbers when setting up DUO Mobile.

  7. Select your Phone Type.

Note: Most phones that aren't iPhones run on Android architecture. If you are unsure which option to pick, feel free to contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

  8. Select 'I have Duo Mobile', and a QR code will pop up on your computer screen.

If you're unable to scan the QR code, please read the following article: Activate Duo Mobile via activation link

  9. Select the '+' button on the top right corner of the Duo Mobile app on your phone, and scan the QR code that has appeared on the computer screen whilst in the Duo Mobile app (QR code can be scanned by holding your phone up to the screen & hover over image).

  10. You have now activated Duo Mobile.

  11. Select 'Send Me a Push' and a notification will pop up on your screen to Approve or Reject.

Hit the green tick (Approve) and you're now set-up.

Using a Bypass

In some circumstances, you may not be able to authenticate by normal means. Duo Mobile offers the ability to use 'Bypass Codes', as well as other systems to allow users to authenticate securely.

SMS Passcode

Note: Please be aware, this method is ONLY available to Deakin student accounts, not staff.

For setting up DUO using SMS codes, please refer to the following article.

  1. When presented with the sign-in screen, you will be offered the option to enter an SMS Passcode.

  2. In the next screen, you will be presented with an input field.

If your phone number on record is correct, you should receive an SMS with a 6-digit code. Enter this code, then select 'Log In'.
