Note: This article applies to workstations running Deakin Desktop for Windows. |
With Deakin Desktop for Windows, you no longer use your short Deakin username (e.g. jdoe) to log into managed Windows computers. Instead, your Windows account name is based on your primary email address.
If your primary email address is an @deakin.edu.au address, you use the first part of your email address, without the @deakin.edu.au suffix. There are a few different examples of how your primary email address may be constructed:
If your primary email address is an @deakinco.com address, you must enter your full email address, including the @deakinco.com suffix.
After entering your account name and password, your Deakin managed Windows computers will prompt you to complete Duo multi-factor authentication (MFA). This helps keep your data more secure.
This prompt has a very short timeout. If you do not respond to the prompt quickly, the computer will return to the logon screen with no error message.
On a staff computer, to save time when unlocking your computer, Duo has an option at the bottom to Remember me for 7 days*.
This is only valid for the current login session. There are some circumstances where you may need to re-authenticate during unlock, including when you change networks, click the 'Cancel' button during the unlocking process, or if the computer slept for an extended period.
A restart or logoff will also reset this option.
Note: This option does not have any effect on computers in teaching spaces.
The first time you log into a staff Deakin Desktop for Windows computer, an introductory Welcome screen appears.
This screen helps explain changes to your environment compared to Deakin's previous Windows 10-based environment.
To navigate between tips, click an item in the left sidebar. Some tips include videos.
To close, click the OK button.
The Welcome screen only appears during your first login. However, you can return to it by opening the Welcome to Deakin Desktop icon in the Start (Windows logo) menu.
Windows Hello, which provides other ways of logging in, such as PIN or fingerprint, is disabled on Windows 11 as it's incompatible with Duo MFA. Digital Services are investigating options that are compatible with Duo.
