Most browsers have a built-in feature that automatically blocks any pop-ups from opening for safety and security purposes. Some Deakin websites and applications will require that pop ups be enabled in order for them to work properly.
Apple Safari (MacOS)
Safari does not include a feature for allowing pop-ups on specific websites and will have to be toggled on globally to allow pop-ups on all addresses.
- From the Safari menu, Choose Preferences, and click the Security tab.
- Uncheck the Block pop-up windows option to allow pop ups. Checking this box again will block pop-ups.
Google Chrome (Windows/ MacOS)
- Open Google Chrome, and navigate to the web page where you wish to have pop-ups allowed
- In the URL window, highlight the entire web address of the page you are currently on, right-click, and choose the copy command
- Select Options (the icon with three dots in vertical order) in the upper right corner of the browser
- Select Settings
- In the side bar, choose Privacy and Security
- Scroll down and click on Site Settings
- Click Pop-ups and Redirects
- Ensure the top option says Don't allow sites to send pop-ups or use redirects
- Next to the Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects heading, select Add
- To allow pop-ups on all Deakin websites, enter [*.]deakin.edu.au
- Select Add
- Close any dialogue boxes that appear. Pop-ups should now be enabled on this web page.
Mozilla Firefox (Windows/ MacOS)
- Open Firefox and navigate to the web page where you wish to have pop-ups allowed.
- In the URL window, highlight the entire web address of the page you are currently on, right-click, and choose the copy command.
- Select Options (the icon with three horizontal bars) in the upper right corner of the browser.
- Select Options if you are using Windows, and Preferences if you are using MacOS.
- In the sidebar to the left, select Privacy and Security
- Scroll down and ensure the Block pop-ups and third-party redirects checkbox is checked and select the Manage pop-up and third-party redirect exceptions button.
- In the Address of web site field, right-click and select the paste command, then select Allow.
- Click Save Changes.
- Close any dialogue boxes that appear. Pop-ups should now be enabled on this web page.
Edge (Windows 10 & 11)
Similar to Safari, Edge does not include a feature for allowing pop-ups on specific websites and will have to be toggled on and off to allow pop-ups on all addresses.
- Select the ellipsis icon (three horizontal dots [...]) in the upper right corner of the browser and select Settings.
- Click Privacy, Search and Services
- Click Site Permissions
- Click All Permissions.
- In the Pop-ups and redirects section, toggle the switch to Off. Pop-ups are now allowed. Changing the switch to On will reverse this.
Safari iOS (iPhones, iPad etc.)
- Launch Settings in the app's menu.
- Tap Safari.
- In the General section, select the toggle next to Block Pop-ups to enable or disable the pop-up blocker. A green toggle indicates an enabled pop-up blocker. disabling it will now allow pop-ups in all websites on Safari.
Chrome Mobile (iOS, Android)
- Go to the Deakin site that required pop-ups.
- At the bottom, tap Always show.
In order to enable pop-ups globally:
- To the right of the address bar, tap More
Settings.
- Tap Permissions > Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn on Pop-ups and redirects.
