How do I register a new phone or device for MFA? (Microsoft Authenticator)


This guide is for staff or students who need to enroll a new phone or device for MFA using Microsoft Authenticator.

Please note that it is recommended to use your smartphone along with a computer (or tablet) to complete this setup.

  1. Download the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator via Google Play, or the App Store onto your smartphone



  2. Visit and login to https://deakin.edu.au/mfa-setup (we recommend that you do this step on your computer or tablet)

  3.  Click "Add sign-in method"




  4.  Select the "Microsoft Authenticator" option
  5. It will now prompt you to download the app to your mobile device if you haven't already



  6. Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your device click "Next"



  7.  Open the Microsoft Authenticator App and scan the QR code.



  8.  Once scanned, you will need to enter the number on the screen into the Authenticator app on your phone



  9.  If successful, you will see the following screen.



  10.  Now make sure Microsoft Authenticator is set as the default method. Click the "Change" link on the default sign-in method line





  11.  Make sure its set to: "App Based Authentication - Notification" and click Confirm
