In an effort to improve cybersecurity and protect the information of our staff and students at Deakin, Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) is in place when accessing Deakin applications. This is done by using the Microsoft Authenticator App.
Follow the instructions to install the app onto your smartphone and set up MFA.
Installation Instructions
Download the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator via Google Play, or the App Store.
If your mobile phone is not able to support Microsoft Authenticator, then please call the IT Service Desk on 1800 463 888, so we can provide you with an alternate MFA method.
Setup Instructions
Please note that it is recommended to use your smartphone along with a computer (or tablet) to complete this setup.
- Download the latest version of Microsoft Authenticator to your smartphone via Google Play, or the App Store.
- Visit https://deakin.edu.au/mfa-setup (we recommend that you do this step on your computer or tablet)
- Enter your Deakin email address.

- Enter your Deakin password.

- If this is the first time you have setup MFA, you will see the following screens:

- It will now prompt you to download the app to your mobile device if you haven't already.

- Make sure the Microsoft Authenticator app is installed on your device and click "Next".

- Open the Microsoft Authenticator App and scan the QR code.

- Once scanned, you will need to enter the number on the screen into the Authenticator app on your phone.

- If successful, you will see the following screen:

Setup Instructions (SMS)
Please note that SMS is only available to students who are unable to use the Microsoft Authenticator app
- Visit https://deakin.edu.au/mfa-setup (we recommend that you do this step on your computer or tablet)
- Enter your Deakin email address.

- Enter your Deakin password.

- If this is the first time you have setup MFA, you will see the following screens:

- Click "Set up a different way to sign in". You can then select the "Phone" option from there.

- Select Phone option.

- If using Microsoft Authenticator app click "Next".

Note: If you're unable to add your phone number, see the "Unable to add your phone number?" section at the bottom of the page
- You will be sent an SMS message. Enter the code on the presented screen.

- Once scanned, you will need to enter the number on the screen into the Authenticator app on your phone.

- If successful, you will see the following screen.

Unable to add your phone number?
There are a number of reasons why you might be receiving the error, the most common scenarios are:
- You have already got a Deakin account set up with Microsoft Authenticator, and you're wanting to add another Deakin account.
- The number you're trying to add was used by a previous staff member.
- The number you're trying to add was previously used on your old Deakin account, or a Staff/Student account if you have both.
