Office 365 – Add a custom font to Microsoft Word (Windows)


Introduction

This guide has detailed instructions on how to download a custom font from Google Fonts, and how to install it to use in Microsoft Word on Windows.

Downloading the font

  1. Visit the Google Fonts website.
  2. Search for the font you would like to use and select the 'Get Font' button.

4. This will download a .zip file.  Right-click on the downloaded folder and select 'Extract All' then 'Extract' to unzip.

Installing the font

  1. Inside the folder, look for files with extensions like .ttf (TrueType Font) or .otf (OpenType Font). Both font types are OK to use.
  2. Right-click the required .ttf or .otf file and select 'Install'.

After installing, the font becomes available system-wide, including in Microsoft Word. 

 

Using the font in Microsoft Word 

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
    Note: If Microsoft Word was already open, please close and restart the program.
  2. From the 'Home' Menu, navigate to the Font dropdown menu. 
  3. Type the font name into the font selector or scroll to find the newly installed font. 
  4. Select the font and start typing!
