Tips for Windows 11

Windows 11 introduces a refreshed user experience. Here are some of the changes and new features.

Table of Contents

Connecting to network file shares

The way you connect to Deakin's network file shares has changed in Windows 11. For more info, see the knowledgebase article "How to map a network drive (Windows)"

The new right click context menu

Microsoft have changed the look and feel of context menus when you right-click files, folders or shortcuts in Windows 11.

The features cut, copy, paste, rename, share and delete now appear as icons only at the top of the right-click menu and other options such as Open with, Send to or Create Shortcut no longer appear by default.

You can access the original right-click menu by selecting the Show more options option at the bottom of the menu or Shift + F10. This must be done on each right click.

Storage Sense automatic cleanup

On Windows 11, your computer automatically cleans up files from your Downloads folder, temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin and offloads unused OneDrive files back to OneDrive online storage. This runs every 7 days. You can also run this process manually:

  1. Click the Windows Start button.
  2. Open Settings, then click System > Storage > Storage Sense.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and click Run Storage Sense Now.

Moving the Start Menu

Microsoft have moved the Start Menu button to the center of the taskbar in Windows 11. If you wish to set it back to the original left alignment:

  1. Right-click on a blank area on the taskbar, then click Taskbar Settings.
This opens Settings Personalisation > Taskbar.
  2. Scroll down and expand the Taskbar behaviours
  3. Set the Taskbar to your preferred alignment.
