Cisco AnyConnect (VPN) – Installation & Usage Instructions (Android)

This article will demonstrate how to install and use Cisco AnyConnect VPN, which is required to access certain shared drives or services required by Deakin.

Note: Cisco Anyconnect automatically disconnects after a continuous period of inactivity, or if your computer is turned off/sleeps. You will need to re-log in to reconnect to required services.

Installation Instructions

  1. Launch the Google Play store, and search for "AnyConnect". The first app that appears will usually be AnyConnect, however make sure that it is published by Cisco Systems, Inc.

    Note: It is very important that you do not download any programs attempting to impersonate Cisco, or AnyConnect as a product. If you are unsure which app to download, please contact the IT Service Desk.


    In the Google Play store, search for "AnyConnect" and install the Cisco AnyConnect product that comes up in first place

Using Cisco AnyConnect 

Note: VPN services require you to use Multi Factor Authentication (MFA).

 

  1. Once finished installing, either open AnyConnect through the "Open" button in the Google Play Store, or navigate back to your apps and locate AnyConnect.

    When you open AnyConnect, you will be presented with a EULA (End User Licensing Agreement). Read through this, then accept it by tapping "OK".

  2. The next screen presented to you will inform you that AnyConnect requires information about your device. Simply tap "OK" to continue.

    To continue with the next popup screen, read through and tap "OK"

  3. The next pop-up will ask if you wish to allow AnyConnect to make and manage phone calls, tap "Deny".

    Note: It's important you tap "Deny", as allowing AnyConnect to manage phone calls will impact your connectivity.

    Tap "Deny" when prompted to allow AnyConnect to make and manage phone calls, as this will impact your connectivity if you Allow it to do so

  4. In the main menu of AnyConnect, locate and tap the "Connections" option just below the VPN toggle.

  5. In the Connection Editor menu, tap "Server Address". You will be required to enter one of two urls:

    For Unencrypted access (Use when using a "Trusted" wifi network such as your home wifi), please type "vpn.deakin.edu.au/unencrypted".

    For Encrypted access (Use when on public wifi, or working overseas), please type "vpn.deakin.edu.au/encrypted".


    Then tap "OK".

    In the Connection Editor menu, tap the "Server Address" option and enter EITHER "vpn.deakin.edu.au/unencrypted" for UNENCRYPTED access, such as being at home. For ENCRYPTED access such as public wifi networks or working overseas, type "vpn.deakin.edu.au/encrypted" insead

  6. Next, tap Done.

  7. On the main menu, tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle to continue.

    8. You now need to enter your Deakin username and password.

    Note: All Deakin staff are required to use MFA (Multi-factor Authentication) with Duo Mobile




    9. As a Deakin staff/students member , or anyone using MFA with Duo Mobile, you will be required to choose 'Send Me a Push' or 'Enter a Passcode' on the DUO login page.

    Open your Duo Mobile app, click confirm or get your passcode.

    Duo Mobile Users: To get your passcode, tap the drop down menu for the Deakin University entry to reveal a 6-digit security code. 

    If you use Duo Mobile, open the app and tap the "Deakin University" entry dropdown menu to reveal a 6-digit code. If you use an MFA token, enter the number generated on the pager screen

  8. You may be prompted about accepting a Connection request. Tap "OK" to continue.

    Next, you may be presented with a Connection Request screen. Tap "OK" to continue

  9. You should now be able to toggle the AnyConnect VPN on, or off at your discretion. To do so at any time, simply open the AnyConnect app, and tap the AnyConnect VPN toggle option.

    You will know if you are connected to the VPN if there is a little key icon in your notifications tray up top.

  10. To end your secure connection, tap the on/off tab next to AnyConnect VPN, so it switched to ‘Off’.

    Ditto          To turn off the connection to the Deakin VPN, tap the toggle
