Cisco AnyConnect (VPN) – Installation & Usage Instructions (Linux)

This article will demonstrate how to install and use Cisco AnyConnect VPN, which is required to access certain shared drives or services required by Deakin.

Cisco Anyconnect automatically disconnects after a continuous period of inactivity, or if your computer is turned off/sleeps. You will need to re-log in to reconnect to required services.

Installation Instructions

Deakin University does not provide Linux computers to staff. If you use a Linux computer, you will have to provide it yourself and, as a result, you’ll need to install the pre-configured version of the Cisco AnyConnect client to be able to connect to the Deakin VPN.

  1. First, please visit the Deakin Software Library and search for "Cisco AnyConnect".

Otherwise you can use the Categories sidebar and navigate to Connectivity Tools > Mobile Apps > Cisco AnyConnect.

  2. On the Cisco AnyConnect page, scroll down to "Download Cisco AnyConnect for Windows, Mac and Linux", and select it.

  3. You'll be prompted with a number of options. Select "Download for Red Hat 6 or 7, Ubuntu, 14.04 or above" beneath the Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client. This will typically be the first option.

  4. Follow these steps (replacing 4.6.040560 with the version you just downloaded):

    tar -zxvf anyconnect-linux64-4.6.04056-predeploy-k9.tar.gz
    cd anyconnect-linux64-4.6.04056/vpn
    sudo ./vpn_install.sh

Using Cisco AnyConnect

VPN services require you to use Multi Factor Authentication (MFA).

  1. On your computer, search for and open "Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client".

  2. If Cisco AnyConnect is not in your applications menu, open a terminal and enter the command shown below:

    /opt/cisco//anyconnect/bin/vpnui

  3. There are two VPN services to choose from. Please select from the below options that suits your needs.

For Unencrypted access (Use when using a "Trusted" wifi network such as your home wifi), please type"vpn.deakin.edu.au/unencrypted".

For Encrypted access (Use when on public wifi, or working overseas), please type "vpn.deakin.edu.au/encrypted".

  4. In the next window, please enter your Deakin Username, and your Deakin Password.

All Deakin staff and students are required to use MFA (Multi-factor Authentication) with Duo Mobile.

  5. As a Deakin staff/students member , or anyone using MFA with Duo Mobile, you will be required to choose 'Send Me a Push' or 'Enter a Passcode' on the DUO login page.

Open your Duo Mobile app, click confirm or get your passcode.

Duo Mobile Users: To get your passcode, tap the drop down menu for the Deakin University entry to reveal a 6-digit security code.

  6. If all log-in information is correct, you should log in successfully after a brief period of Cisco AnyConnect loading.

Next time you need to connect to the VPN, please be aware you will be prompted to sign in again.
