EndNote – Installation & Usage Instructions (macOS)

Deakin's preferred bibliographic software is EndNote for Windows and Mac. It is a database program that manages bibliographic references and allows them to be placed automatically in your Word document.

Please follow the instructions below to download Endnote and enable the EndNote toolbar in Word.

Are you having issues with the EndNote add-in in Microsoft Word on your new Mac with an M1 or M2 chip? Endnote has a workaround for this issue. Click here for more information. 

Please do not update your installation of EndNote if prompted, it may result in you not being able to edit content within the application. If you do update it and see this issue, please uninstall the application and reinstall it.

Installation Instructions

 Please ensure your office applications are up to date and are closed before attempting to install EndNote.

 

  1. First, please visit the Deakin Software Library and search for "EndNote".

    Otherwise, you can use the Categories sidebar and navigate to Mobile Apps > Teaching & Learning > EndNote.

  2. On the EndNote page, scroll down to "EndNote X20 – Download for Mac", and select it.+


     
  3. Please locate the EndNote20.dmg file and then click on Install EndNote20SiteInstaller.dmg 



  4. You may see a prompt after clicking on EndNote20SiteInstaller.dmg, select open.





  5. Click on Install, you will be prompted with an Installer window. Proceed through all the prompts and install EndNote20.



  6. Once EndNote20 is installed, you may be prompted to allow access to files in your Documents folder, select OK




    If you are using MacOS Sonoma and above, you may also need to create an Endnote Library, otherwise the program may appear blank after installation.

     

     To fix this, go to the File menu, and click New

     

          You will then need to create a new EndNote library.

         


       Once you've created the EndNote library, you will be ready to use EndNote as per below.

         

 

Using EndNote

 

eSolutions does not provide assistance or instruction with using EndNote to reference or compile a bibliography. This section is ONLY for locating or enabling EndNote as an add-on. .

 

  1. Open Word, click on Tools and Navigate to "Templates and Add-ins".



  2. Please check all EndNote-related items, then click on "OK".



  3. Restart Word. EndNote should now be ready to use.

 

EndNote Add-in for Microsoft Word - Troubleshooting

If you have already installed EndNote on your computer and having trouble launching the EndNote add-in for Microsoft Word please follow the steps below.

  1.  Close the word document and launch EndNote.
  2.  Click on the Endnote menu (from the top left) and select Customizer.
  3.  Ensure the option ‘Cite While You Write’ is checked > click on ‘Next’ and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the customizer.
  4.  Reopen the Word document and check if you could see the add-in.

Note: For older macOS devices, if you continue to have issues between Word and EndNote.

Check Systems Settings > Privacy & Security > Automation; ensure that both Word and EndNote can communicate with each other.
