How do I allow pop-ups in my browser?
Most browsers will have a built-in feature that automatically blocks any pop-ups from opening for safety and security purposes. Some websites and applications will required that pop ups be enabled in order for them to work properly, so pop-ups will need to be enabled. Instructions for this are separated according to browser below.
Apple Safari (MacOS)
Safari does not include a feature for allowing pop-ups on specific websites and will have to be toggled on and off to allow pop-ups on all addresses.
Steps:
- From the Safari menu, Choose Preferences, and click the Security tab.
- Uncheck the Block pop-up windows option to allow pop ups. Checking this box again will block pop-ups.
Google Chrome (Windows/ MacOS)
To allow pop-ups on all Deakin websites, enter [*.]deakin.edu.au as the site in Step 9
Steps:
- Open Google Chrome, and navigate to the web page where you wish to have pop-ups allowed
- In the URL window, highlight the entire web address of the page you are currently on, right-click, and choose the copy command
- Select Options (the icon with three dots in vertical order) in the upper right corner of the browser
- Select Settings
- Scroll to the bottom of the settings menu and select Advanced
- In the privacy section, select Content Settings
- Select Popups, and ensure the top option says Blocked
- Next to the Allow heading, select Add
- Paste the web address in the site box
- Select Add
- Close any dialogue boxes that appear. Pop-ups should now be enabled on this web page.
Mozilla Firefox (Windows/ MacOS)
Steps:
- Open Firefox, and navigate to the web page where you wish to have pop-ups allowed.
- In the URL window, highlight the entire web address of the page you are currently on, right-click, and choose the copy command.
- Select Options (the icon with three horizontal bars) in the upper right corner of the browser.
- Select Options if you are using Windows, and Preferences if you are using MacOS.
- In the sidebar to the left, select the Content icon to display the content menu.
- In the Pop-ups section, ensure the Block pop-up windows checkbox is checked, and select the Exceptions button.
- In the Address of web site field, right-click and select the paste command, then select Allow.
- Click Save Changes.
- Close any dialogue boxes that appear. Pop-ups should now be enabled on this web page.
Edge (Windows 10 & 11)
Similar to Safari, Edge does not include a feature for allowing pop-ups on specific websites, and will have to be toggled on and off to allow pop-ups on all addresses.
Steps:
- Select the ellipsis icon (three horizontal dots [...]) in the upper right corner of the browser and select Settings.
- In the advanced settings section, select View advanced settings.
- In the Block pop-ups section, toggle the switch to Off. Pop-ups are now allowed. Changing the switch to On will reverse this.
Safari iOS (iPhones, iPad etc.)
Steps:
- Launch Settings in the app's menu.
- Tap Safari.
- In the General section, select the toggle next to Block Pop-ups to enable or disable the pop-up blocker. A green toggle indicates an enabled pop-up blocker. disabling it will now allow pop-ups in all websites on Safari.
Android Devices (Phones Tablets etc.)
Interfaces may differ depending on the browser you are using, but instructions remain the same for allowing pop-ups.
Steps:
- Select Settings in the upper right corner of the browser (icon will be three dots in horizontal order, or a gear icon).
- Select Advanced.
- Verify that the Block pop-ups toggle is checked/switched to on. If it is, toggling this option to unchecked/off will allow pop-ups on the browser.
