A lapel microphone is a wireless, hands-free microphone. It is used for presenting and recordings. It consists of a rectangular base unit, to which is connected an antenna, and a cable with a microphone on the end.

Quick Start Guide to the Lapel Microphone
A lapel microphone will be found on the presentation desk or in the desk cupboard of the teaching space.
- Put the base unit on your belt or in your pocket
- Clip the microphone centred between the chest and the throat. If you do not place the microphone in the correct location, the audio quality will be impacted
- Move the slider on/off switch on the top of the base unit to turn on the microphone.

Use of the Lapel Microphone
- If you wish to mute the microphone without switching it off, this can be done with the touch panel on the desk by touching the microphone icon (the icon will turn red). This will mute all microphones.

- The volume level of the microphone cannot be adjusted. Microphones in teaching spaces are calibrated with the other audio/visual equipment and no adjustment is necessary. The volume level of all audio through the speakers can be adjusted using the control panel on the desk.
- In some teaching spaces, including all teaching spaces with Small Classroom Capture, audio from the PC comes through the speakers, but not from the microphone. However, the microphone audio is being picked up and recorded.
Batteries for the Microphone
There are two, yet similar types of lapel microphones used at Deakin University:
Shure ULX microphone that uses a 9-volt battery
- An indicator on the LCD panel of the base unit shows how much charge remains in the battery
- The battery should be replaced once it is at one bar of power

- Spare batteries will be found on the presentation desk or in the desk cupboard of the teaching space.
Shure ULXD1 microphone with rechargeable batteries
- An indicator on the LCD panel of the base unit shows how much charge remains in the battery in hours and minutes

- On the presentation desk you will find a docking station for recharging the lapel microphone
- The lapel microphone should be placed in the docking station after use
